Structure, Delivered Dose, Pump, Skin and Fragrance Version Explained

Projection and longevity are not one performance score. Projection describes how strongly a perfume is perceived around the wearer at a defined dose, time and distance. Longevity describes how long it remains detectable or recognizable on a defined surface. The two can move independently.

A perfume may stay on skin for ten hours yet become almost invisible to people nearby after the first hour. Another may fill the space at first, then lose its tea, floral or fruit identity and survive only as a generic woody trace. Delivered dose, pump output, skin and adaptation can matter as much as the percentage in the bottle.

Before asking a fragrance supplier to make a perfume “stronger and longer-lasting,” identify which part of the performance profile is actually failing.

Performance is a profile, not one number. The useful approval sample is the finished perfume in its actual base and final pump, tested at a defined dose by more than the wearer alone.

Projection, Longevity and Identity Longevity Are Different

There is no global standard for projection distance, longevity hours or pump dose. Brands may define project targets, but those conditions are not universal perfume rules.

Three Common Performance Profiles

1. It lasts, but it does not project.

The wrist still carries a detectable trace late in the day, yet other people stop noticing it much earlier. The structure may be low-release, the concentration too dense, the base too slow, or the pump output lower than expected. Close-range persistence is not proof of spatial presence.

2. It projects strongly, then loses its identity.

The first hour is vivid, but the flower, tea, peel, spice or creamy accord disappears and only a familiar woody or musky residue remains. More sprays usually make the opening louder; they do not rebuild the missing middle or dry-down. This is an identity-longevity problem, not merely a question of whether some odor remains.

3. The wearer cannot smell it, but other people can.

Continuous exposure can reduce the wearer’s sensitivity to the same scent. A colleague or new visitor may still detect the perfume while the wearer believes it has vanished. Projection should therefore be judged by an external evaluator, not approved from self-report alone.

Concentration Is Not Delivered Dose

Finished concentration, pump output and spray count are three separate variables.

Delivered fragrance mass = finished fragrance concentration × mass per actuation × number of full actuations

Consider two products applied three times:

·       Product A: 15% fragrance, 0.10 g per spray = 0.045 g fragrance delivered.

·       Product B: 20% fragrance, 0.06 g per spray = 0.036 g fragrance delivered.

Product B has the higher bottle concentration, but Product A applies more fragrance mass. This does not prove that A will project farther or last longer—structure, atomization and surface still matter—but it shows why concentration alone cannot explain the result.

To check the pump, prime it, weigh the bottle, perform at least ten full actuations, weigh it again, and divide the mass loss by the valid sprays. Repeat if output is inconsistent, and note leakage or incomplete actuation.

Different pumps and formulas do not create identical sprays, but current evidence does not justify claiming that one droplet size always gives better projection. The reliable conclusion is simpler: standardize the final pump before comparing perfume performance.

More sprays increase dose. They do not rewrite the fragrance structure. A higher concentration may increase density or close-range persistence while making the opening less transparent. Neither is an automatic upgrade.

What the Formula Can Change—and the Trade-offs

A supplier can review performance only after dose, pump, concentration, base and test conditions are controlled. Projection and longevity are not independent sliders.

If early projection is too weak, the review may focus on clearer lift, stronger spatial impact, less suppression from dense components, or better performance at the target concentration. The trade-off may be a sharper opening, faster early loss, a change in similarity or a higher material cost.

If the perfume remains detectable but loses its intended identity too soon, the review may focus on heart-to-base continuity and retaining the key accord later in wear. The trade-off may be a thicker, sweeter or more skin-close dry-down, as well as changes in color, solubility, cost or regulatory headroom.

A different fragrance version may be worth comparing where a real alternative exists. Price alone does not determine performance; the question is whether the version fits the target concentration and profile.

Why Skin, Blotter and Adaptation Change the Result

Blotter is useful for controlled comparison because the surface and dose can be standardized. It helps reveal structure and substantivity, but it does not reproduce skin temperature, lipids, evaporation or permeation. A perfume that remains clear overnight on blotter has not automatically passed a skin-wear test.

Skin is the intended surface for many fine fragrances, but it is less repeatable. Fragrance and individual skin properties can influence evaporation, without supporting simple oily-skin or dry-skin rules. Use several wearers, the same dose and site, no scented body product, and repeat on another day.

Hair and fabric may retain and move fragrance differently, but they also introduce staining, compatibility and intended-use questions. They should remain a product-specific boundary, not become a list of application tricks.

Adaptation adds noise. Use external evaluators, blind codes, breaks between assessments and more than one day to separate repeatable behavior from one-person perception.

Run a Controlled Projection-and-Longevity Test

All distances, time points and spray counts below are project-defined conditions, not international standards.

1. Define the performance profile.

State the product position, concentration, final pump, spray count, projection window, identity-longevity target, climate and trade-offs. “Noticeable at conversational distance for two hours, with the key identity recognizable close to skin after eight hours using three full sprays” is a project brief, not a universal benchmark. Office, hot-climate and evening perfumes need different targets.

2. Calibrate the delivered dose.

Measure average mass per actuation from the final pump and calculate the delivered fragrance mass. Do not compare three sprays from one bottle with three sprays from an unmeasured pump.

3. Build the minimum control set.

·       Current formula + final pump

·       Base blank

·       A narrow concentration comparison, if safe and physically compatible

·       A real alternative fragrance version, if one exists

·       A reference product at a controlled dose, where appropriate

Change one variable at a time.

4. Test blotter and skin.

Use the same blotter, dose, room and blind code. On skin, use the same site and dose across several wearers, with no scented lotion, and repeat on another day.

5. Measure projection and longevity separately.

Projection should be scored by a non-wearer at a fixed distance, room condition and time after application. Longevity should use two endpoints: whether any odor is detectable, and whether the target identity remains recognizable.

6. Repeat and control adaptation.

Use more than one wearer, evaluator and day, while keeping the batch, pump, dose and environment consistent.

When to Change Dose, Pump, Base or Fragrance Version

·       Change dose first when measured application is lower than intended and the fragrance identity remains intact at a matched dose.

·       Change the pump first when output is unstable or the same liquid performs differently across bottles.

·       Change the base first when a reference alcohol system performs normally but the buyer’s alcohol, water or co-solvent system changes release, drying or physical compatibility.

·       Change concentration when a narrow, controlled ladder identifies a better balance without unacceptable clarity, density or skin-feel effects.

·       Compare another fragrance version last when dose, pump, base, concentration and evaluation method are controlled but the perfume remains too quiet, too short or loses its key identity.

This order prevents reformulating a fragrance to solve a low-output pump—or changing packaging to solve a structural problem.

What to Send the Fragrance Supplier

A useful performance report can stay short. Include:

·       Fragrance identification: code, version and lot.

·       Finished formula: concentration, base and whether the calculation is w/w or v/v.

·       Delivery: final pump output and intended spray count.

·       Test design: surface, wearer count, external evaluators and environment.

·       Time points: projection checks plus detection- and identity-longevity endpoints.

·       Scent change: which accord becomes weak, dominant, harsh or disappears.

·       Reference: the exact perfume version or approved comparison sample.

·       Trade-offs: priority between similarity, diffusion, longevity, color and cost.

Approve the Performance Profile You Intend to Sell

A perfume does not need maximum projection and maximum longevity to be successful. It needs a profile that fits its use: controlled presence for an office scent, clarity in a hot-climate daily perfume, or a more substantial identity for an evening product.
