How to Make Perfume with Fragrance Oil

The calculation is only the starting point. The finished result still depends on the fragrance system, solvent, concentration, mixing process and testing conditions.
Choose Alcohol-Based Spray or Non-Alcohol Roll-On First
An alcohol-based spray perfume and a non-alcohol roll-on perfume do not use the same base.
· Alcohol-based spray perfume uses perfume fragrance oil with perfumery alcohol and, in some tested formulas, purified water or a co-solvent.
· Carrier-oil roll-on perfume uses perfume fragrance oil with a carrier oil such as caprylic/capric triglyceride or jojoba oil.
· DPG-based or blended roll-on perfume uses a non-alcohol solvent system and should not be described as the same type of carrier-oil formula.
Solid perfume and water-rich body mist are different formulation systems again. A fragrance direction may be adapted for more than one format, but the same fragrance compound, concentration and process should not automatically be used across all of them.
What Type of Fragrance Oil Can Be Used?
For an alcohol spray, use a finished perfume fragrance compound intended for alcohol-based fine fragrance testing. Candle fragrance oil, diffuser fragrance oil, essential oil and a ready-to-use roll-on perfume should not be treated as interchangeable materials.
Confirm the intended application before fixing the formula, then evaluate the fragrance in the actual perfume base rather than judging it only from the raw oil. The proposed concentration must also be checked against the application-specific information for that fragrance. An IFRA-related document can support the use-level review, but it does not approve the finished perfume or replace finished-product testing.
Materials for Alcohol-Based Spray Perfume
· Perfume fragrance oil: Use the correct fragrance code, version and batch. Obtain the density when an accurate conversion between kilograms and millilitres is required.
· Perfumery alcohol: Use high-purity, low-odor cosmetic- or perfumery-grade ethanol with a denaturing system permitted in the relevant market. Rubbing alcohol, fuel alcohol and hand-sanitizer alcohol should not be treated as automatic substitutes.
· Purified water, if used: Added water is optional. If the tested formula includes it, use appropriately purified water. Water changes the solvent balance and should not be added casually.
· Basic equipment: Use a calibrated scale, clean and dry compatible vessels, a cover or lid, suitable mixing and filling tools, and labelled retained-sample containers.
· Safety: Ethanol is volatile and highly flammable. Use suitable ventilation and keep the batch away from flames, sparks and hot surfaces.
How to Make Alcohol-Based Perfume
1. Confirm the application and use level. Verify that the fragrance compound is intended for alcohol-based perfume before selecting the concentration.
2. Define the complete formula. Fragrance oil, alcohol, water and any co-solvent must add up to 100%.
3. Record the calculation basis. Millilitres are useful for a quick trial; a repeatable production formula should use a clearly defined volume or weight basis.
4. Measure the fragrance oil. Record the fragrance code, version, batch and actual quantity.
5. Add the main alcohol portion and mix gently until uniform. This is a practical small-batch default, not the only industrial sequence.
6. Add any approved co-solvent according to the tested sequence.
7. Add purified water gradually, if the formula includes it, and observe the batch.
8. Keep the vessel covered and allow the batch to rest under defined storage and observation conditions.
9. Recheck the batch before filling, then fill a small packaging trial.
10. Keep a retained sample labelled with formula, fragrance code, batch and date.
If the perfume becomes cloudy, stop before scaling. Use the perfume-cloudiness diagnostic before relying on filtration, extra alcohol or another additive.
Do You Need DPG or Another Co-Solvent?
Not automatically. DPG is a low-odor solvent or co-solvent used in some fragrance and perfume systems. It is not a plant oil and should not be presented as the same thing as a carrier oil.
If the approved formula includes DPG or another co-solvent, it must be counted inside the 100% total:
Alcohol percentage = 100% - fragrance percentage - water percentage - co-solvent percentage
A co-solvent should not be added on top of a formula that already totals 100%. Its dosage and mixing sequence depend on the tested formula. Adding DPG also does not guarantee better longevity; it can change viscosity, diffusion, volatility and skin feel.
Oil-Based Roll-On Perfume: A 10 ml Example
· Perfume fragrance oil: 2 ml
· Carrier oil: 8 ml
· Total: 10 ml
The carrier is part of the finished product, not an invisible filler. Caprylic/capric triglyceride and jojoba oil differ in viscosity, oxidation behavior and skin feel. A DPG-based non-alcohol roll-on or blended solvent-and-oil base is another formulation route and should be tested separately.
1. Confirm that the fragrance is suitable for the intended non-alcohol leave-on application.
2. Select the carrier oil or tested perfume-oil base.
3. Calculate the complete formula and record whether it is based on volume or weight.
4. Add the fragrance oil, then add the carrier gradually and mix until uniform.
5. Allow the blend to settle and check appearance, odor and uniformity.
6. Fill several test bottles and check leakage, ball movement, product flow, skin feel and staining risk.
7. Wear-test the finished product and retain a labelled sample.
How to Scale the Formula
· Fragrance oil required = total finished quantity × fragrance concentration
· Water required = total finished quantity × water percentage
· Alcohol required = total quantity - fragrance oil - water - co-solvent
· Carrier base required = total quantity - fragrance oil - other included components
The result is a theoretical material requirement. Actual production also includes transfer residue, retained samples, filtration where relevant, filling loss and deliberate overfill.
One kilogram is a mass, not a fixed 1,000 ml volume. Use the actual density and process loss when estimating how many bottles a fragrance-oil quantity can produce.
Use Volume for Planning and Weight for Production
Millilitres make a formula easy to understand because perfume bottles are sold by volume. Once the formula is approved, repeatable production is usually better controlled by weight.
Fragrance oil, ethanol, water and carrier oil do not have the same density. A 20% volume formula is not automatically identical to a 20% weight formula. Record the calculation basis and do not switch without a documented conversion.
What to Record Before Scaling
· Fragrance code, version and raw-material batch
· Actual quantities and calculation basis
· Mixing order, method and time
· Storage and observation conditions
· Appearance and scent after resting
· Packaging trial results
· Actual yield and material loss
· A labelled retained sample
The fragrance should be judged in the finished base, not only from the raw oil. Compare the opening, diffusion, dry-down and repeatability between separately prepared trials.
